Thomas Dailey, 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away peacefully after a life richly lived.
Born July 30, 1937, in Kansas City, Kansas, Tom was one of many in a proud Irish family known for their strong bonds and lively gatherings. He grew up in the vibrant Armourdale neighborhood, where circus parades, watering elephants, and the infamous tale of his father’s pet goose—cooked by his mother one Sunday—became part of his legendary storytelling. These stories, always shared with laughter, were a testament to a life filled with joy and humor.
Tom served honorably in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958. After his service, he joined the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, dedicating 36 years to the force and retiring in 1995 as Chief of Police. He was known for his courageous leadership and for introducing Community Policing to the city. His stories from the department, told with a signature sparkle in his eye, were equal parts thrilling and entertaining—beloved by family and colleagues alike.
A devoted Catholic, Tom spent a year in the seminary before pursuing other callings. He was an avid handball player for 35 years and picked up golf in retirement, enjoying weekly games with friends and family. He also gave generously of his time as a volunteer—serving more than a decade at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Menorah Hospital, Catholic Charities Food Pantry, and Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care. With the American Red Cross, he aided communities impacted by Hurricane Ike in Texas and Hurricane Sandy in upstate New York. In recent years, he served as a Eucharistic Minister at his parish, St. Michael the Archangel.
Family was the heart of Tom’s life. His devotion to his wife Mary, the love of his life, was inspiring to all who knew them. He adored his children and grandchildren and treasured every moment spent with them. As a beloved leader of the “brother-in-law’s club,” Tom brought joy, camaraderie, and fun wherever he went. His infectious laugh and magnetic presence made him a cherished friend and confidant.
